Italians protest - Anglitaliano, it's not 'cool' and it's not 'OK'!
Created: 16/09/2008
A plea has gone out from an influential Italian cultural institute – following a four month website survey – to reject the continuing Anglo-Saxon invasion of their beautiful language. Although typically less vociferous than its French equivalent the renown Académie Française - which often takes its populace to task regarding their use of English linguistic imports - the Dante Alighieri Society nevertheless concludes that the results of its poll shows that Italians want more respect for their language.
The survey asked visitors to the website to nominate their examples of over-used foreign words. The most popular, unpopular Anglicism was ‘il weekend’ with 11% of the votes. Other dislikes included OK, cool, welfare, briefing, mission, location, bookshop, devolution, computer, know-how, privacy and shopping. And we thought they loved shopping! Although many Italians regard the trend towards Anglitaliano as an inevitable by-product of globalization and even chic, others disagree and wish to keep the language unsullied. However there were other regularly used English words which escaped the Dante Alighieri’s inferno including the word ‘sexy’. Now we wonder why that is?
If you would like a clean Italian translation – we promise not to include any Anglitaliano – unless you would like us to of course. For a free quote please call to speak to one of our project controllers on 08450 345677 or contact us via this website.
