Did you know…
…that Russia is the largest country in the world covering 11 time zones with its 17 million square kilometres which spread from northern tundra to the Black Sea coast?
75% of its current population of 144 million (made up of 100 different nationalities) live in Russian cities which are fast growing into modern consumer metropolises. Since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, relations between the U.K. and Russia have been transformed: the Department for International Development is supporting Russia’s transition to a market economy with funds to support administrative and social reforms as well as helping in areas such as education, human rights, and environmental concerns.
An Example of Russian text.

Trade between our two nations has grown at an annual rate of 25% in the last five years and since 2006 the U.K. has been the largest foreign investor in Russia with over 400 British companies operating there. In that year, the international community directly invested nearly US$14 billion in 2006, of which $9 billion came from the U.K.
Russia is currently at the multilateral phase of negotiations in its bid to become a member of the WTO and Accession Talks were also opened last year for OECD membership.
The booming jobs market has made Russians much more self-confident and demanding: firm but approachable, they will expect you to be flexible and patient in your dealings with them and will be looking for a serious long-term business relationship. You’ll need Andiamo to translate your business card into Russian – always offer it Russian-side up!
Business negotiations are usually conducted in Russian, so remember to book an Andiamo! interpreter and to take your accurately-translated materials with you. Dealings will be in US Dollars or Euro but don’t be lulled into thinking that plastic will be accepted in payment for your simpler purchases: you’ll need to buy roubles. If buying gifts, remember that you should never proffer these over a threshold, nor should you ever give an even number of flowers…and a black cat betokens bad luck.
Vodka, the national drink: drink it straight, don’t put your glass back on the table after a toast and chase it down with a salty morsel such as pickles, herrings or bread. The other national drink is tea – chai- which is usually drunk black with lemon. Borsch (soup) based on cabbage or beetroot is usually delicious, despite appearances, as is kefir - a fizzy drink of fermented cow’s milk.
Whatever you do, never complain as Russians are fiercely patriotic and highly educated - especially on their culture. Let Andiamo! help familiarise you with some Russian words – it helps to at least recognise signs in the Cyrillic alphabet when you’re out and about, particularly on the Metro.
