Working in Europe, you’ll need French not only in France and Monaco but in Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg and even parts of Northern Italy.

French is the native language of 7 million Canadians whose government is obliged to provide all services as well as reports of parliamentary proceedings in both French and English. Most packaging in Canada is also in both languages, so if you’re selling your products there, please bear this in mind.

A remnant from Africa's colonial past maintains French as the first or second language in about 30 of its countries with 115 million native speakers. And in recent years it is French which has evolved more rapidly than any other language in sub-Saharan Africa due to its dominance in their education systems. If you're trading with Mauritania, Algeria, Morocco or Tunisia, French is the language you’ll need.

Derived from Latin – one of the Romans' first conquests was the area they named their 'Provincia' and we still call Provence today – local Celtic languages and those of post-imperial Northern European invaders including the Franks, the 'purity' of French is fiercely guarded by the 'immortels' (immortal ones) of the Académie Française. When doing business in a Francophone country, it's advisable to have at least some basic French.
