What are these tools?

Translation memories are databases which store segments of source text alongside their corresponding translations in the target language(s). These segments may be sentences or phrases. Individual words are handled separately in term bases.

How do they work?

These applications are used to search for previously translated equivalents on a sentence-by-sentence basis. They scan the text and offer the translator the choice of an exact match (100% match), where there is no difference between the source text in the document and the TM, or a fuzzy match (less than 100% match), where the source text is only similar to that in the TM.

When are they used?

Their benefits are directly proportional to the amount of repetition contained in the material. So they're very useful when translating lengthy, highly repetitive technical documents or new versions of previously translated texts, but less applicable to more literary or creative work.
