Interesting facts

  • The seven emirates are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain. Each of them is an autonomous kingdom ruled by a hereditary emir.
  • Its neighbours are Saudi Arabia to the west and south, Qatar to the north, and Oman to the east. Most of the land is barren and sandy.
  • In the 16th century the United Arab Emirates were controlled by the British. In that period many pirates were operating from the harbours in the area, earning the country the nickname ‘Pirate Coast’.
  • April and September temperatures peak at 50°C with high humidity levels.  In the southerly and northerly parts, winds blow over the UAE with occasional sand storms.
