Tell us a bit about yourself…

Hi, I’m Luke and I’ve just come to the end of my translation master’s at Leeds University. I managed to gain project management experience during the course, which gave me an appreciation of just how important this role is in the translation industry. I’m an upbeat and positive individual, who watches far too much The Chase.

How did you get into languages and translation?

The first time I ever went abroad was to Sweden when I was 7 years old. I remember being fascinated by not understanding anything anyone said. That’s when my love for languages first took hold, and I’ve loved learning French, Spanish and Italian through school and university. Translation felt like a natural step for me after finishing my undergrad!

Did you go on a year abroad? If so, where did you go?

I went to university for 5 months in Valenciennes, France and the same in Oviedo, Spain. After graduating I spent another two years teaching English in Clermont-Ferrand, France and Ibiza. It was a great experience living somewhere other than the north of both countries, even though that was also brilliant! I’d love to see the south now, since I’ve never been in either country.

What are you most looking forward to, working at Andiamo?

I’m excited to gain experience working on the other side of the translation industry, and to the processes and challenges that come with it. I’m also really looking forward to working with the other project managers. The atmosphere in the office is so friendly and I think we’re going to make a great team!

What is your favourite place in the world?

I was lucky enough to spend the lead up to Christmas last year in Iceland, and it’s honestly such a breathtakingly beautiful country. I can’t remember ever loving anywhere that much, nor that quickly. I hope I get the chance to go back soon!

Do you have any hobbies?

I enjoy jazz, lyrical and contemporary dance, taking part in both competitions and shows if I can. I also used to play the clarinet and saxophone for 8 years in an orchestra, but unfortunately haven’t had the time recently. I love to read too, especially dystopian novels and Harry Potter (I’m currently reading the series for the 8th time).

What are your top 3 favourite films of all time?

I really enjoy Marvel films, especially Thor and The Avengers. I also watch Love Actually every Christmas, and can’t even even count how many times I’ve seen Disney’s Tangled.
