What is simultaneous interpreting?

Our simultaneous interpretation service is usually requested for large events such as conferences. We understand that these types of events may require coordinating multiple interpreters for different languages, sourcing specialist equipment, and delivering content to large audiences. Simultaneous interpreting involves the interpreter relaying what is being said in one language into another language in real time. Typically, this service requires two interpreters who sit together in a booth and take turns interpreting, usually alternating every 20 to 30 minutes, because interpreting simultaneously is very intensive. Sharing the workload between two interpreters prevents either one from burning out, and ensures their minds remain sharp so they can deliver a high-quality and accurate service.

Although this method of interpreting involves the use of a booth and equipment, at Andiamo! we also offer whispered interpreting. Sometimes known by its French name chuchotage. The interpreter stands or sits next to the person who needs to understand the foreign language and relays the content in real time by whispering in their ear.

Simultaneous interpreting differs from consecutive interpreting. This is when the interpreter listens to the speaker for about half a minute, whilst making notes. They then interpret into the required language to the audience while the speaker pauses.

What is simultaneous interpreting?

Simultaneous interpreting is the process by which an interpreter conducts a real-time translation of dialogue, to avoid disruption to the conference or session (unlike some consecutive interpreting scenarios). The interpreters sit out of sight in a booth, working in pairs (one pair per language) and the audience/delegates wear headsets so they can tune in to the relevant channel to hear their language.

Whispered interpreting (chuchotage) is another simultaneous interpretation service and is used if you have just 1 or 2 delegates with mixed nationalities/speakers of other languages, in settings such as training sessions and small conferences. They will sit behind the delegate(s) and literally whisper the translation in real time.

What is the difference between simultaneous and consecutive interpretation?

Both types of interpreting are live. But there are significant differences:

Consecutive interpretation is when the speaker pauses to allow the interpreter time to relay the information to foreign listeners. It doesn’t usually require equipment.

Simultaneous interpretation is real-time interpreting and usually requires equipment such as booths, a PA system and headsets to ensure minimal interruption to the session. This form of interpreting doesn’t introduce pauses into the event, and happens as though by magic, with the interpreters hidden in booths.
