What is simultaneous interpreting?

Our simultaneous interpretation service is usually requested for large events such as conferences. We understand that these types of events may require coordinating multiple interpreters for different languages, sourcing specialist equipment, and delivering content to large audiences. Simultaneous interpreting involves the interpreter relaying what is being said in one language into another language in real time. Typically, a simultaneous interpreting service requires two interpreters who sit together in a booth and take turns interpreting, usually alternating every 20 to 30 minutes, because interpreting simultaneously is very intensive. Sharing the workload between two simultaneous interpreters prevents either one from burning out, and ensures their minds remain sharp so they can deliver a high-quality and accurate service.

Although simultaneous interpreting often involves the use of a booth and equipment, at Andiamo! we also offer whispered interpreting. Sometimes known by its French name chuchotage, the interpreter stands or sits next to the person who needs to understand the foreign language and relays the content in real time by whispering in their ear.

Simultaneous interpreting differs from consecutive interpreting. This is when the interpreter listens to the speaker for about half a minute, whilst making notes. They then interpret into the required language to the audience while the speaker pauses.

Step 3: Once we know the language(s) you require, the date/time/location of the assignment, if it will be remote/on-site, your audience size, and the subject of the content that needs interpreting, we hand-pick the interpreters who best suit your project. All our interpreters must meet our exacting onboarding standards, ensuring they are highly qualified and experienced.

Step 4: We give you a quote for our simultaneous interpretation service, including any interpreting equipment if required.

Step 5: Sit back and let us handle the rest! We provide you with the interpreters and the necessary equipment, and your dedicated Project Manager will work closely with you to answer any queries you may have in the run up to your event. On the day, our specialist technicians will set everything up and thoroughly test the equipment to ensure the smooth running of your event and they will be available for support at any point.
