Our approach to website translation

We like to be involved as early in the project as possible, as we can help you to consider translation and localisation throughout the development process.

For example, by providing sample text in the foreign scripts at the outset, we can liaise with your designers to ensure they display correctly (ironing out potential import/export issues later down the line), and we can use our cultural understanding to help you select the most appropriate imagery for users in specific territories.

Our three-stage approach:

Step 1: SEO keyword translation

An unoptimised website is an ineffective one, and the SEO keywords at the heart of a website’s optimisation (that must appear across website page copy, page titles and more) also require translation.

We take your source language SEO keywords, translate them into your chosen languages, and with the help of our in-country linguists, conduct keyword research to find the most appropriate, effective keywords with the highest volume.

Once accepted by you, we load these translations into a new translation memory (TM). TMs are part of the software environment we work in and help us translate new text in a way that is consistent with phrases saved in the TM. This is important to ensure the consistency of keywords and terminology used throughout the translation.

Step 2: Content translation

Our translators then translate your website content into your chosen languages, conducting localisation as we go, to ensure currencies, measurements, and imagery is culturally appropriate for users in the territories you’re translating for.

From technical sectors, like medical, automotive, manufacturing and engineering, to creative sectors like toys and games, marketing and beyond, our linguists have you covered.

To ensure we provide smooth and connected website translation services, we export our completed files in the format of your choosing, to enable you to simply upload them into your website’s CMS and avoid the copy and pasting process, to help ensure accuracy during the publishing step.

Step 3: Conducting checks

If you have in-house, mother tongue, multilingual employees who would like to review the translations before sign-off, we can supply bilingual files for review.

When translating languages with non-Latin alphabets, we recommend that we check how these translations are displayed in the website page, pre publishing, to ensure that content is displaying correctly and also oriented appropriately, for example, right to left for Arabic.

FAQs

How do I add translation to a website?

There are many ways to add translated content to a website. Luckily for you, when working with an LSP, the process doesn’t need to involve copying and pasting content from your site into documents, and pasting translated content back into the page.

A common approach amongst LSPs (and one we use at Andiamo!) is for you to export the files in your existing file structure (from the back end of your website) and have your chosen LSP translate the editable files and return them back to you in the same structure. Some LSPs also offer API connectors for a more automated process.

For organisations of all kinds, professional website translation services are advisable over hiring freelance translators, using AI solutions, or plugins.

Typically, established LSPs will not conduct translations live on your website, because:

  1. Translation QA and translation memory tools are not compatible with a live website. These tools are essential to support the quality, accuracy and consistency of translations.
  2. Websites can be less stable than off-line documents/systems, and technical problems can slow service speed and potentially lead to loss of work.
  3. It can lead to project creep, where new pages are added outside of the original scope and quotation.

Instead, some LSPs work on files exported from your file structure in the back end of your website, run it through specialist software to eliminate repeated text (which is accounted for in the quotation – helping to save you money), translate them, and return the files back to you in the same structure. Others export content and import translations via API connectors.

For SEO keyword translation, you would typically provide an Excel file of your researched terms to your LSP, who can send an Excel file of translated key terms back to you.

We wouldn’t recommend that any organisation use a translation plugin. Whether you’re in a technical sector like automotive, engineering or manufacturing, a highly regulated sector like medical, legal, or finance, or if your content contains any industry-specific terminology, working with a trusted LSP like Andiamo! is advisable.

Unlike human translators, plugins cannot convey company tone of voice, research your products, localise your content, or adapt translated content appropriately and accurately for a target audience.

The cost of website translation services varies depending on the level of service you choose. Many LSPs will have a service to suit most budgets.

At Andiamo, we offer human translation and machine translation post-editing (MTPE), for website projects.

As a higher level of service, our human translation services cost more than MTPE. MTPE is best suited for technical websites, typically for organisations in sectors like engineering, automotive and manufacturing.

Market research should be your first port of call when embarking on translating your website, to ensure you identify the most appropriate languages for your organisation, the location of your current user base, and your plans for international expansion.
