Bowel Cancer UK was founded in 1987, and is the country’s leading charity dedicated to this cause. The charity’s vision is to help create a future where nobody dies of bowel cancer.
They work towards this goal via the work they do supporting those affected by the disease, campaigning for change, supporting and funding research, educating both healthcare professionals and the public, and implementing strategies like their 2023 five-year ‘On a Mission’ plan.
The important role of charity translation services
Bowel Cancer UK’s extensive experience gives them insight into the unfortunate reality that non-native English speakers, or those who speak it as a second language, experience poorer health outcomes than native and fluent English speakers.
The charity is committed to improving these health outcomes for all communities across the UK, which requires trusted charity translation support from an LSP who specialise in the sector, like Andiamo, to ease communication barriers and help them to develop strong human connections.
Andiamo! is pleased to support them in their important work.
Andiamo translated two resources for us. One is an awareness leaflet explaining the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer, and details of the bowel cancer screening test.
The other is a summary of bowel cancer treatment pathways for people who have been diagnosed. Andiamo translated these into three languages for us, and also provided excellent DTP to maintain layout and readability.
Our approach
Laying the foundations
We began by working with the Bowel Cancer UK team to establish the brief and the scope of the project, the content types we’d be translating, and the target languages.
Due to the important role typesetting would play in the project going forward, we had internal meetings to discuss how we would approach DTP to provide Bowel Cancer UK with attractively and appropriately formatted, print and reader-ready documents.
Translation
We offer charity translation services in over 140 languages, including those which use different scripts, such as Punjabi and Urdu, which were two of Bowel Cancer UK’s target languages.
Bowel Cancer UK opted to use our Gold Service, which is our ultimate QA solution for those looking for the very highest quality, accurate charity translations, especially in a medical context.
This service offers a 3-stage checking process, the first by the sector specialist native-speaking translator, the second by a different equally-credentialed specialist translator, and a third by our in-house linguists.
Andiamo were friendly, responsive and professional. They helped us iron out any details like what fonts and dialects to use, their knowledge of these issues was invaluable for us as it was our first time translating our health information into non-UK languages. The turnaround time was clearly communicated and met, and everyone we worked with was lovely!
The challenges of charity translation
A key challenge of charity translation is finding the most suitable translators.
At Andiamo, we don’t just use the most skilled and experienced medical specialist translators and those who have previously worked for charities of various kinds, we use those with specific experience of the topic, terminology, and document style.
We assigned Bowel Cancer UK a dedicated project manager, who worked closely with our vendor management team to source and assign the appropriate translators, and helped guide the client through the process and serve as their point of contact.
Our newly translated resources have proven extremely popular. Our first print run went out of stock within the first two months - we’ve sent over 3,000 copies out across the UK.
We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response from healthcare professionals, who have told us how useful they’ve found the resources when it comes to communicating with their patients. We now have further translations planned, and will be using Andiamo for them.
The results of our translation
