When do we use MT?

We offer machine translation services to clients like Herma, Southco, BOBST and Textron, in technical sectors such as automotive, manufacturing, and engineering with:

  • Large volume, technical translation projects.
  • Quick turnaround, non-creative translation projects.
  • Information only, gist translation requirements.

For creative projects, we would recommend human translation, as MT does not always capture the brand messaging or cultural nuances. We also recommend human translation for medical and legal translation.

Machine translation is most suitable for content such as user guides and manuals, technical catalogues and brochures, knowledge bases, – any text that’s not creative or specialised.

If you are not sure if your project is suitable for machine translation, just get in touch and we will gladly help.

Our machine translation service

At Andiamo, we offer human, machine translation post-editing (MTPE) as standard (rather than machine post-editing), to provide you with the highest-quality output that approaches the quality of traditional human translation, at a faster rate, and a lower service cost.

We are 100% transparent about all elements of our service, and offer a variety of machine translation service levels to serve a range of requirements, and ensure you understand the precise service you’re receiving.

MT Service Levels

  • Full human MTPE – Carried out by native speaking, skilled, experienced and sector specialist translators, who have trained or worked in your sector and have a firm understanding of its terminology. Our translators post-edit the machine generated output to enhance its readability, and align quality as closely as possible with human translated content. This involves checking and adapting the text to improve translation accuracy, spelling, grammar, fluency, and ensuring that the translation is suitable and appropriately localised for your target audience and territory.
  • Light post-editing – As the name suggests, our light post-editing service offers a light, basic revision of your machine translation output. The service includes editing mistranslations, translating/correcting any content generated by the MT software, and correcting major spelling and grammar errors.
  • Raw machine translation – We can provide you with 100% MT software generated output for you to adapt in-house to your own purposes. We tend to provide this service only to clients with in-house linguists or staff who are native speakers of the target languages.
  • Tender response MT – To help you respond to tenders in the short critical window you have, we can provide you with initial raw machine translation at a fast rate and minimal cost, to enable you to register your interest if appropriate. Later, we can provide you with light or full human MTPE, so you can respond to the tender.

Our MTPE process and approach

Andiamo! uses tried-and-tested MT software which produces a high-quality output that meets our standards.

We also integrate translation memory into our machine translation service. By taking this hybrid approach, we promote translation consistency (by ensuring that your content is translated in line with previous translations and glossaries), while offering lower service costs over time and reducing turnaround times.

Beyond technical and non-creative texts, the integration of MT with TM can be especially useful when processing a large volume of files to save valuable time.

Our MT Process

  1. We assess your content to ensure it’s suitable for MT
  2. Content is analysed in our translation memory software, utilising any memories we have for your organisation.
  3. We then conduct the initial pre-translation of the content via machine translation, and with the use of TM software.
  4. Machine translated output is then sent to our professional freelance translators to be post-edited. Your translator will work to improve translation quality, localisation, and ensure that your company-specific terminology is used accurately within your translated text.
  5. The post-edited translation is then checked in-house by skilled linguists before being delivered to you.

FAQs

What is machine translation?

Machine translation is the process or service by which text is translated using artificial intelligence technology. There are three types of machine translation: rule-based, statistical, and neural translation.

NMT is considered the most advanced and accurate approach to machine translation, and mimics the human brain to support the accuracy of translations. It’s Andiamo’s chosen MT model. For high-quality MT output, machine translation post-editing is used, introducing a human element, to edit and adapt the content to improve its tone, accuracy and quality.

The accuracy of MT output is dependent on the software being used, and the type of text you’re translating. At Andiamo, we advise including a human element in the MT process to maximise translation quality. We do this via our Machine Translation Post-Editing service, where MT output is adapted and checked by human, sector-specialist translators.

Approaches may different from LSP to LSP, but for Andiamo, machine translation works by putting files into our CAT tool and generating output using neural machine translation (NMT).

We use this alongside translation memories (TM) and glossaries to ensure the content is consistent with previous projects, including the client’s preferred terminology, and that translations reflect their organisation’s established style and tone.

Content is then post-edited by our qualified, human translators.

We offer machine translation post-editing services (MTPE) for a variety of projects, for organisations across a huge range of sectors.

We advise MTPE be used if your text is technical, informational, repetitive, and clearly formatted, such as internal documents, user manuals or product catalogues.

MTPE is not recommended for creative or subjective texts (like marketing copy, literary texts or PR content) or content of a regulatory or highly specialised nature (such as medical documents, contracts, legal documents, and safety information).

We can also offer a raw machine translation service for organisations who don’t want to invest time or money in professional MT software, but have the appropriate skills amongst their in-house team for the post-editing. Do keep in mind though that just as not all English speakers can write fluent and correct English, the same applies to other languages!

If quality is your number 1 priority, human translation will always be the best option.
It’s important to consider the purpose and target audience of your content to determine which is right for you. MTPE is best for technical texts, alongside translation memory (TM) and/or a glossary of key terminology.

MT cannot truly behave like a human, and as such, we do not recommend it for more creative, subjective or specialised texts. It’s easier and more beneficial to use human translation for such projects, rather than post-edit MT output.

Generally speaking, yes. When used in the right contexts, MTPE is slightly cheaper as our translators have a starting point to work from.

It is important to point out that their professional expertise is essential here and although it does cut down on time, they still spend considerable time reviewing and adapting the text along with researching specific terminology.
